It now has been 50 years since the March on Washington, during which Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Had a Dream” speech. We asked members of the Andover High School community how they think the march has changed our society today.
“It started the change that made the equality today. It was those words that had the impact that was so amazing.”
“People are people and that’s that. It doesn’t matter what heritage you are or the color of your skin.”
“It’s changed our society a lot because it made a lot more things equal. The civil rights movement sparked other movements and gave others the courage to speak up. Women’s rights were founded off of that too. It gave women the courage to speak up.”
“I think that the march changed our society because it proved to many people that fighting for something you believe in is the right thing to do and if you fight hard enough you will succeed.”
“It’s changed the way people think and therefore it has affected major events. It would have gotten the same conclusion even without the speech.”
