This year, due to an abundance of snow days, the seniors got lucky and had minimal days of school compared to previous classes. However, next year’s class will have just the opposite.

In the 2013 – 2014 school year, students will be starting on August 28 and the seniors will be graduating Monday, June 9, assuming there are five snow days. The date of June 9th is twelve days prior to the last day of school. The reason next year’s seniors will be graduating later for the first time, Dr. Lord explained,  is for “compliance to the state law” and correlates with the “minimum number of days met.”

The AP exams are distributed on a national scale, so those dates in the 2013 – 2014 school calendar will not change. The finals schedule for the underclassman will also be untouched. However, the finals schedule for seniors will be slightly altered. The seniors will have their finals one week after Memorial Day, starting on June 2.

This news has been released fairly recently so feedback has been limited. Junior Hugh Smith said it’s “disappointing, but there’s nothing you can do.” In reference to 2014 being the first time this new protocol is implemented, Hugh noted “It’s tough being the transition year.”

Sammy Ruthazer, another Junior, added “It could be worse.”
