In 24 years of coaching high school basketball, Andover High’s coach David Fazio has never seen a team with as much chemistry as his own during the 2012-13 campaign. This team chemistry has lead the undersized Warriors to a successful 9-3 record thus far. Returning three starters from last year’s team, the Warriors have looked quite impressive.
The success thus far has been built on the motto “progress before perfection,” explained Fazio. However, the Warriors have had few blemishes thus far, including an impressive win over then third-ranked North Andover. This impressive performance was followed up by a routing of Lawrence. The Warriors then fell to the highly esteemed Central Catholic Red Raiders by 2 points in a true thriller.
Fazio explained that a true challenge facing his team this season will be overcoming injuries, most notably a season-ending injury to superstar sophomore Connor Merinder. Fazio explained, “We will take one day at a time, and not look ahead to any of our upcoming tests.” He expressed that this team is a work in progress. It is the team chemistry, however, that will keep this team tough.
The Warriors face another tough test on January 25 when they travel to Central Catholic for another showdown with the Raiders. This time the Warriors believe they can come out on top. The initial tough loss to Central gave the team confidence that they can play and compete with the best. It is this mentality that can lead to the Warriors’ success throughout the season.
If the Warriors can maintain this mentality and bond, they should be quite successful throughout the year. Looking forward, the future seems quite bright.
