You know when you’re sitting on your couch on a Friday night and scrolling through On Demand and you can’t find the right movie? You think to yourself: do I want to watch an action movie, a movie with adventure, a romantic comedy, a fantasy film maybe? Or if you’re out with someone and you both have different tastes in movies you have to do a coin toss to choose the genre? Well, there is a solution to your dilemma: John Carter.

Based on a book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this movie has all the assets of a classic. Just the right blend of action, adventure and fantasy with a dash of comedy and romance as a side.

So now you’re thinking ‘what is the plot of such a concoction?’ Well here it is. A Civil War soldier has been transported to Mars or Barsoom, the red planet. The widower has stumbled across a magical medallion and suddenly he is on the red planet. But what he doesn’t know is that even though the inhabitants look a little different, the politics on Mars are not that different from our own. Helium, an empire, is about to fall to Zodanga, which is ruled by a powerful, evil Martian. The princess of Helium, Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), sets off to save her empire and runs into John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) and notices almost immediately that he has some special ‘talents’. Now the true dilemma is that he has a choice: he can face his fears and fight for Helium and maybe find love on the way or he can do his usual and run away.

This movie was a pleasure to watch. My eyes did not leave the screen once; I was extremely captivated and when the movie ended, I was almost sad. There are so many twists and turns I did not even see coming. To say that the film met my expectations would be the understatement of the century. I would even venture to say that this film has made it on my top ten list.

John Carter is THE movie to see.
