Andover High School has plenty of sports teams that compete during the fall, winter, and spring seasons, but there is one team that doesn’t get as much recognition. Participating in six meets, as well as a state competition at the end of the year, is the Andover High School Math Team.
Each Thursday, 15 active members of the team gather together to prepare for their next meets. I had the opportunity to sit in on a “runoff” where, based on the categories for the upcoming meet, a team was selected. Teams are decided by club advisors Ms. Haltmaier and Mrs. Ogrodowcyzk, as well as captains Linda Wang and Emmy Mai.
Mrs. Haltmaier and Mrs. Ogrodowcyzk are in their first year as advisors for the Math Team, taking over for Mrs. Kierstead and Mrs. Iascone. When asked what it is like as a first year advisor, Mrs. Ogrodowcyzk responded, “We are learning the process as we go.”
Another problem that the club faces is numbers (no pun intended). “Due to the loss of seniors last year, we are facing a lower turnout than past years,” said Wang.
Joining Wang and Mai as seniors are Jenny Hu and Henry Chuang. This group has led the team to seventh place out of 17 large schools.
Underclassmen are encouraged to stop by room 363 on Thursday afternoons. With new advisors and a strong underclassman turnout, this club has a bright future.
